Day 1 |

Airport > Negombo - 25 minutes

At the airport you will be greeted by our Jetwing Representative and your chauffeur guide who will take you to the beach resort town of Negombo. Rest and recoup from any jet lag. Negombo is a buzzing hub of contrasts and cultures. If you feel like exploring, your chauffeur guide will show you around some of the most interesting sights and landmarks and perhaps take a boat ride along the Dutch canal. Or, you can relax on the most famous golden sands of Negombo beach.

Highlights

Enjoy a city tour of Negombo

Pay an early morning visit to a ‘lellama’ – Negombo’s bustling fish market. Watch the fishermen bring in their night’s catch for sale. Return to enjoy your breakfast at the villa. Later on, journey to the historic city Anuradhapura, deep in the country’s central heartlands. Stop en route to enjoy lunch at a typical local restaurant. Arrive at your stay – the Ulagalla Resort. Hidden deep within a rural village close to Anuradhapura, it is a stunning eco haven beside the still waters of the Ulagalla lake.

Highlights

Negombo Town

Scenic Journey

The first kingdom of ancient Ceylon, Anuradhapura lasted for over a thousand years. Thousands of years later, its grandeur remains, well preserved. The sprawling complex contains a rich collection of archaeological and architectural wonders: enormous dagobas (brick stupas), ancient pools and crumbling palaces. Many stupas have been restored over the years and devotees continue to flock. A walking tour to see the Sacred Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanweli seya and others is a must. Drive to visit Mihintale – a sacred rock temple highly significant to Buddhists.

Highlights

Anuradhapura Ancient City

Mihintale

Sigiriya rock fortress – a world heritage site, is an engineering and architectural marvel. The frescos halfway up the rock face are still remarkable, and the 360 degree view from the top is incredible. Pidurangala is another massive rock formation almost directly opposite Sigiriya, with equally majestic views, especially of its more famous landmark. In the afternoon, visit the sprawling expanse of ancient ruins at the World Heritage City of Polonnaruwa – the second kingdom of Lanka which reigned from the 11th to 13th century A.D.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before your long journey to Hatton – high in the mountains. Take a break along the way to visit a spice garden at Matale to see how Sri Lankan spices, both popular and rare, are grown and processed. Some samples would make perfect gifts. Continue travelling along the mountain route to Hatton. Check into your luxury bungalow and meet your private butler. Rest of the day is yours to rest and relax enjoying the luxury setting, indulging in some gourmet cuisine too.

Enjoy breakfast in your luxurious colonial plantation bungalow, attended to by your personal butler. Take a tea experience tour with the hotel’s resident expert and learn the story of world renowned Ceylon Tea. Stroll through the lush plantations admiring the view. Get to know about how tea is grown, plucked and processed. Try your hand at tea plucking, take in a tour of a tea factory, and take part in a tea tasting session. The rest of the day is yours to spend at leisure.

After breakfast, enjoy a scenic drive from Hatton to Ella – a small but popular town high in the mountains famous for breathtaking views. Stop to admire the cascading Ravana Ella waterfall and the iconic Demodara Nine Arch Bridge and the Diyaluma Falls – Sri Lanka’s second highest waterfall. Continue down the heights into the lower valleys, and further into the scrub jungles of Yala. The contrast in the landscapes is spectacular to see. Your stay at the exclusive luxury jungle resort is inside Yala National Park.

Highlights

Ravana Falls

Diyaluma Falls

After breakfast, explore Yala or Bundala National parks. Comprising scrubland, sparse forest, grassy plains and brackish lagoons, Yala is famous for the Sri Lankan Leopard (a unique subspecies) and is considered to have the highest density of leopards in the world. Sri Lanka’s ‘Big Five’ can be spotted here too – elephants, sloth bears, sambur and crocodiles, so you might see them all, and other animals and birds too. Bundala National Park is a fantastic maze of waterways, lagoons and dunes home to thousands of birds.

Highlights

Yala National Park – two trails

Bid farewell to the jungle and head west, stopping by the natural phenomena called Hummanaya blowhole. Continue on to Galle. Sri Lanka’s oldest living city dotted with historic sites, Galle is one of the few World Heritage sites where a bustling population continues to thrive. Dutch-colonial buildings, ancient mosques and churches, grand mansions and museums vie on cobbled streets with stylish cafes, quirky boutiques and impeccably restored villas and hotels. After lunch, travel on to Bentota – a very popular beach resort on the west coast.

Galle Fort Tour

Take a well-earned rest from travelling and sightseeing. However, Bentota is a hive of activity – on and off the beach, in case you want to explore. Spend an idyllic morning just watching the waves. The beach at Saman Villa is somewhat secluded, so you have all the privacy you need to sunbathe or relax in peace. You could also indulge a little at the spa with a rejuvenating wellness programme. Visit the exquisitely landscaped Lunuganga Gardens – the perfect place to enjoy an al fresco lunch.
