After breakfast, visit Sigiriya – a key cornerstone in the cultural triangle. Climb the amazing Sigiriya rock fortress – a World Heritage Site. This architectural masterpiece, built in the 5th century A.D. sits on the plateau of a giant monolith. Afterwards, travel to the World Heritage City of Polonnaruwa – the second capital of ancient Lanka from the 11th to 13th century A.D. Take a walking tour to the ruins of Lankathilaka, Thuparamaya, Royal Palace, Rankoth Vehera and Gal Viharaya. Return and relax at your hotel.
After breakfast, leave for the hill capital of Kandy, once the stronghold of the last Sinhalese kingdom. En route, visit a spice garden in Matale. Pay homage to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which houses Sri Lanka’s most sacred relic – a tooth of the Lord Buddha. Visit the Udawattekele forest reserve or the bustling streets and market places. Take in the views from upper Lake drive. Visit a gem museum, or watch a performance featuring traditional dances from the different regions of Sri Lanka.
After breakfast, visit the beautiful Peradeniya Botanical Gardens which has around 4000 plant species. Continue the journey to Nuwara Eliya, stopping at a tea plantation and factory en route. After a rest, go exploring the old colonial town of Nuwara Eliya – often referred to as “Little England” with its old bungalows, Tudor-style hotels, well-tended hedgerows and pretty gardens shrouded in cool misty air. Take a guided stroll past the renowned golf course, the colonial members only Hill Club and English styled cottages, and Victoria Park.
After breakfast, travel to Yala via Ella. The view from Ella Gap is one of the most spectacular sights in Sri Lanka. En route, stop at Ravana Ella before descending to Yala. Yala is famous for the Sri Lankan Leopard, and Sri Lanka’s ‘Big Five’ can be spotted here too – elephants, sloth bears, sambur and crocodiles, as well as leopards. Take an evening jeep ride with our naturalist guide and keep your fingers crossed – you may well spot them all, and other wild life too.
A scenic drive to the south coast, and Galle – Sri Lanka’s oldest living city dotted with historic sites with a fusion of European and Arabic cultural and architectural influences. Explore the Galle Fort with its cobbled streets and learn the history behind its Ramparts. A hive of activity, arts and culture with alleys lined with restaurants, art galleries and shops selling jewellery and antiques. Then, you choose to extend your holiday, or we can take you to the Airport to meet your departure flight home.
